Friends of Faye Cran well-know of her remarkable and devoted efforts which every day, support those most in need in ways most others only ponder. Faye is known by those who have been recipients of her life's work as Muma Kuku and Muma Faye. Rotary and other groups have recognised Faye in various awards, but there is nothing tangible in Tanzania that honours her work.

Recently, New Zealand Rotarians visiting Faye expressed a desire to undertake a major project that would epitomise Faye's Service above Self. After much cajoling, the Faye Cran Chem Chem Primary School and the Mama Kuku Preschool will be built in a community in desperate need of a primary school
and a preschool.

The estimated cost of the school and preschool including fittings, fixtures and playgrounds is US$600,000. The school and preschool will have 16 classrooms, admin block and staffroom, toilet block, library block, staff houses and sports area.

Many Rotarians have visited Tanzania during the past 15 years as donors and volunteers have experienced Faye's generosity, hospitality and energy as she chaperoned them to the dozens of projects undertaken before and during that time.

Donations of US$50,000 or more will have part of the complex named in recognition, and gifts of US$5,000 or more will be included on a recognition board.

John Magufuli when elected president of Tanzania on 29th October 2015  said, every child was entitled to receive free education from preschool to year 7.

Many children were not going to school because they couldn't afford the fees

He declared

  • No public school was allowed to charge school fees

  • No public school could refuse to enrol a child

  • Parents would be punished if they did not send their children to school

The result

From 5 million
children going to school the number enrolled rose to 11 million - schools had to resort to 2 sessions a day and because of shortage of teachers many had to teach for two sessions a day. Class sizes rose from 40 to over 50. Many communities did not have a public school and the government did not have sufficient  funds to build them

This is the case Chem Chem village in Usa River. A community  of  23437 (2012) 23 km from Arusha Tanzania's 3rd largest city which has no public school.

The Rotary Clubs of Usa River and Moshi are looking for World Wide funding to build a school at the same time we want to honour Rotarian Faye Cran for all the work she has done in this country of behalf of Rotary International
